Clothing and Laundry

My first weeks in the trailer, though not officially ‘boondocking’ were spent just as if I were living in a house in terms of clothing. I do not own a lot of clothes, so each week would require everything to be washed and readied for the next week. This habit stayed with me for a few weeks until I grew bored of having to spend a day at a laundromat each week.

2 weeks ago I made the change to a simple plan;

- Underwear was changed daily as usual
- Socks changed every one to two days depending on how soiled they became
- Shirts changed every 2-3 days depending on how much I perspired
- Thermal underwear (for sleeping) changed every 3-5 days
- Pants changed every 5-7 days

2 Weeks, and I still have not go to wash clothes. I did, yesterday, 14 days in, have to hand wash some underwear and socks as I did not have enough to go further. However, if my trip to the laundry is once every 2 weeks now that is a huge improvement. In fact, I still have enough pants and shirts to go another 2 weeks and since undies and socks are easy enough to hand wash… I’m looking at laundry once per month at this rate.

Sept 2011 update – The above was all written in January of 2011 while sitting in the Arizona desert. Winter in Arizona consisted of 40 degree nights, and 70 degree days. I neither froze or sweat, which means I can wear the same T-shirt for days at a time and not feel to sick about myself. However, this week, while traveling 1300 miles over 5 days, the 80-90 degree days forced me to use up 5 different changes of clothing. At that rate I’d burn though all my clothing within 2 weeks. It just goes to show that what sounds like an easy plan one day may not be so easy the next.
